It is a very rare occasion that a Chinese PC Game was made into a TV serial. Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan is adapted from a PC game. The characters, as well as the story, originated from the game, considering some alterations to make it more beautiful!
The Plot:
Ten years ago, Pai Ye Qiao Zhu was brainwashing the whole country of Nan Zhao Guo that their queen is a monster. He is asking for the emperorâs signal to announce a death sentence punishment for the queen. The emperor, being a useless and helpless emperor, was not able to do anything. The death sentence was then put to order. However, before the queen was to be killed, Chiu Xian Qien saved her. Unfortunately, Pai Ye summoned a water demon to flood the whole country and the queen, left with no other choice, decided to transform into a snake in order to stop the demon. The water demon was far too strong for her to handle that she decided to turn into a stone in order to step on the water demon forever. While this was going on, Li Xiao Yao, a stranger from another area came and rescued the queenâs daughter Ling Er together and her nanny Lao Lao. He brought them to an island called Xian Ling Dao and told them to live a normal life.
Ten years later, a street-rat, Li Xiao Yao, together with his auntie, was living like a rascal. They opened a hotel but the hotel was not doing very well so they earned a living by fooling other peopleâs money. One day, a group of unfamiliar people (who were members of The Moon Clan from Pai Ye) came as guests of the hotel. Suddenly, Xiao Yaoâs auntie became ill and the group of unfamiliar men advised him to go to Xian Ling Dao and ask for a medicine from a fairy in the said island. But before that, he must first defeat the stones that secures the island. On the island, he met Ling Er and surprisingly, Ling Er recognizes him. Lao Lao agreed to give him the medicine but he has to marry Ling Er. Xiao Yao agreed. But little did Xiao Yao know that this was Pai Yeâs plan because he wants to kill Ling Er.
As Xiao Yao was to leave Xian Ling Dao, the group of unfamiliar men came and killed the people of Xian Ling Dao. Ling Er was kidnapped and Xiao Yao was forced to drink a pill that makes him forget everything at Xian Ling Dao, including Ling Er. When Xiao Yao was back at the hotel, he was not able to remember anything. By accident, he saw Ling Er locked in a room for she was kidnapped. He rescued her but ling Er was heartbroken because he could not remember her. Ling Er told him about Xian Ling Dao and that Lao Lao was in danger therefore Xiao Yao agreed to bring Ling Er back to Xian Ling Dao to save Lao Lao. Unfortunately, as they reached the island, Lao Lao was already dying and he told Xiao Yao to bring Ling Er back to Nan Zhao Gou to be with her father. As the two journeyed back to Nan Zhao Guo, they meet different people like Liu Qing Yen, his cousin Lin Ye Ru, Ah Nu, and Tang Yu. They were also able to experience different obstacles that made their love and friendship stronger as they battle against the evil Pai Yeâ¦..
Characters:
Li Xiao Yao: Hu Geâs performance here was a first for me to see although I know that he has already starred in Lu San Bien with Jimmy Lin. His performance was nothing exceptional. I donât know if it was because of his character or he is just too ordinary. He made some good laughs when he was with Lin Ye Ru, Ah Qi (Liu Qing Yen) and Fourteen (Tang Yu) but I get bored whenever he and Ling Er act lovey-dovey.
Zhao Ling Er: Liu Yi Fei, no matter how pretty she is in the eyes of many, has never been my favorite! Her acting was boring and stiff, all she ever does is cry and make herself become like a great person who is willing to sacrifice. She keeps on turning back on her problems and she was even too selfish when she made her decision not to forget Xiao Yao inside the cave causing the death of someone. She was like a Princess who is all lady-like and innocent that everyone, except me, loves. But I must admit, somehow, her acting improved a little since "Tian Long Ba Bu". Maybe because at least, her character here has more emotions compared to Wang Yu Yan in "Tian Long Ba Bu".
Lin Ye Ru: Ady An Yi Xuan is a gem! She is so pretty and her acting is number 1! Lin Ye Ru is my favorite character in the whole series. She can make you laugh and she can make you cry. She is the one who has a true selfless love for Xiao Yao! She is strong and when she says she is willing to give up things for Xiao Yao, she really does without hesitation. She was never selfish and does not act like a damsel in distress. I have loved Ady in "Outsiders" and "Outsiders II" and this time, she has once again, earned my respect. More power to Ady!
Ah Nu: Esther Liu Ping Yan has never been a favorite of mine before when I watched "The Westside Story". She annoyed me and I did not like her a bit. But after watching her in "Xian Jian", I began to view her in a different way. I like Ah Nu because her innocence was so natural. She was funny and child-like. Her portrayal of the character was believable and adorable. She even tries to change her high-pitched voice into an alto when she disguises herself as a man! I laugh everytime she grows mustache on her face! She and Tang Yu made a perfect pair.
Tang Yu: Eddie Peng Yu Yan was another great performer! He was a perfect choice for a perfect character. I have seen his performance in 2002 in "Tomorrow" and he was ok but this time, he was different. He was awesome! He was able to develop a calm and strong character who was willing to do anything for Ah Nu, even to give up his own life even though he knew that Ah Nu treats him just like a brother. His greatness was paid off in the end for Ah Nu realized that it is Tang Yu that she truly loves. He was also very funny as Fourteen who has a very disciplined character but became too amazed to eat midnight snacks. I am looking forward for more great performances from Eddie, who has already become my new favorite.
Liu Qing Yen: Wang Lu Jiangâs performance was commendable too. He made a very effective Ah Qi that everyone, including me, loves. He was smart and stupid at the same time. He was hilariously funny at first but towards the end, he turned into something you wouldnât imagine, which was supposedly for the good of his friends! He has a very good facial expression which can make you feel his characterâs joy and pain.
Chiu Xian Qien: Tse Kwan Ho, what can I say about him? Now this is one veteran actor! I loved his performance for he carried his character very well. After watching Xian Jian, I realized why he was such a famous actor. Even the simple lines he delivers makes you familiar to the character he is portraying. He was a cool teacher, a funny friend, a weird lover, and a good father.
Pai Ye Qiao Zhu: Tsui Kam Kongâs stern face fit the role of Pai Ye. However, I did not see much of his skills probably because he was a villain at the back of the events wherein he was the mastermind who only showed his full character at then last part of the story. Pai Ye was weird because he always wanted to create a perfect world which he believes he failed to experience. He was the black is black and white is white type of person. However, his being too emotional lacked him strength to become an all-evil villain.
Wu Hou and Sheng Koo: I like Sheng Koo better than Wu Hou. She is prettier and her performance was better too. I do not understand why all falls for Wu Hou and not Sheng Koo.
